Men’s T-Shirt Guide

by Atif Nadeem 02 Nov 2020

The word "T-Shirt" is synonymous with a wardrobe staple. It is a very versatile clothing item that most people own in bulk quantities. It goes with all the latest and past trends. It is one piece of cloth that you can wear anytime and anywhere, whether you wear it under a shirt while going to a gym, with a suit, or even while going to bed.

Some people feel that T-Shirts should be worn everywhere, but then a group believes that they are only made to be worn in a gym or at a beach.

However, the true essence of fashion lies in between both these mindsets. A T-shirt is an extremely versatile clothing piece. It should not be worn on certain occasions and events. We will be discussing more in detail in this article. We will also discover more about the history, fashion aspects, and more about this wonderful clothing piece.

History:

Though t-shirts are very new, their roots go more than 100 years back. T-shirts are named for their boxy body and sleeves shaping the T-shape. This T-formed clothing goes back several centuries.

Initially made of wool or silk, these were intended to absorb heat transfer and were a shield between the skin of a man and the more costly clothing he needed to protect against the body's grime, as it was worn as an undergarment.

The US Navy started to give its sailors these shirts to wear as an innerwear, and in the following years, other branches of the military followed this trend. These undershirts were intended to be used under one's uniform, but sailors frequently took off their uniform top to work in their t-shirts and pants, especially in a tropical atmosphere.

Clothes made exclusively for use as underwear also became open to the public. Farmers and workers of all sorts and athletes and sports fans wore them as comfortable, economical, and easy to clean cloth.

Around the 40s, they also became popular among young boys, who did not follow any dress code and were infamous for being unhygienic. It got even more popularization in the 50, the 60s, and 70s and became the most popular worn clothing item in the US.

How to Choose a T-Shirt:

You must know about some factors before buying a T-shirt; we will be discussing them in brief detail below:

  • Material:

Generally, it is good to go for tees made up of 100% cotton as they feel soft, natural, cool, and look good. However, you may also opt for other options like a blend of polyester and cotton. Special synthetic shirts may absorb sweat more but are only ideal for workouts and are a good option for those who sweat a lot and can't handle cotton shirts.

The thickness of the fabric does not necessarily determine the shirts' quality as some shirts that are made with longer fibers are lighter, softer, and more durable than cotton. Thinner tees look cheap and sloppy, while thicker tees look more expensive and rich.

Also, thinner shirts in light and neutral colors may hint them to be undershirts rather than a t-shirt. The difference between an undershirt and a t-shirt lies in the fabric weight as undershirts are thinner than tees, as they fit tightly to absorb sweat.

  • Color:

Men's classy T-shirts are sold more in solid colors. The most common one is white, which is an all-rounder as it goes with any style. You may wear it with a pair of jeans or as an undershirt. You may also go for the gray color, but it comes with a drawback as it might display your armpit sweat.

If you want eye-catchy attention-seeking color, then get yourself a Navy Blue T-Shirt. Then comes the one color that is getting very popular these days among youngsters, black. Although a black t-shirt is hard to pull off, it can give you an intense look.

  • Fit:

Having the t-shirt that rightly fits you is very important. A T-shirt should neither be too tight nor too baggy. If you have a toned body, then you may opt for tighter tees. If you are overweight and bulky, then loose fit shirts would be a good option for you.

The sleeves should be till halfway up one's upper arm. If you are very tall, then you may wear sleeves that go down a bit farther down. Ensure that your shirt's seams align well with your shoulder ends and shouldn't extend to your arms.

The length of your tee should not cross your hips but must cover your waist adequately or may extend a few inches below your waistline. A shorter t-shirt would lead into an exposed belly and back when you'd bend over.

  • Graphic T-Shirts:

Graphic T-shirts have only gotten popular in recent decades and give a more modern and younger look. The bigger the graphical images, the more casual the t-shirt. Graphic T-Shirts are not intended to be worn at formal events and should be restricted to everyday use.

Opt for such a graphic tee that does not have screaming logos, embarrassing images, funny jokes, etc. printed on them but go for tasteful designs.

  • Collar:

T-Shirts mainly come in two types of necklines. The first one being the crew shirt and the second one being the V-neck shirt. You may choose each according to your body, choice, and look.

The crew collar gives a formal look, and it broadens the neckline and creates a look of squared shoulders. It is ideal for those guys who have a little build and body frame and is suitable for men with narrower faces and longer necks.

The V-neck t-shirt is more towards the casual side, and it stylizes the everyday t-shirt. It is ideal for shorter guys as it would make them look less squarish and add a little height. Men with rounder faces can also opt for them.

Conclusion:

Although T-shirts have become a go-to look for everyone these days. This does not imply that you can wear them anywhere. You need to invest some thought and fashion sense when opting for wearing a t-shirt and wear only what suits your style and body.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
